The Archaeological Museum in Milan

The story of the Archaeological Museum in Milan is rooted in the cultural institutions of Milan in 18th century. From 1776 on the Academy of Brera sampled items which came from private collections, dissolved or abolished ecclesiastical foundations and demolition works in the centre of the city. In 1862 the Ministry of public education founded the "Patrio Museo di Archeologia", which collected documentation dating from the prehistoric to the modern age. In 1877, the Milan Municipality created the Municipal Art Museum, for the collections donated from private benefactors. It was situated in the so-called Hall of the Public Gardens at Porta Venezia. In 1900, the Museum moved to the Castello Sforzesco and, when the site become inadequate, to the Monastero Maggiore, which was inaugurated in 1965.
The Archaeological Museum distinguish itself in the rich scientific activity and the accurate publications on the collections it houses.
